Mercer County Gets Three New District Justices
Senate confirms three nominations in six weeks
As state Senate Majority Caucus Secretary, Senator Bob Robbins (R-50)
oversees the Chamber’s consideration of the Governor’s nominations for a variety
of boards and authorities, as well as municipal and county positions.
Recently he had the opportunity to present to the Senate -- within the
span of little more than six weeks -- the nominations of three Mercer County
residents to fill district judge vacancies.
"One of the less recognized, but extremely important roles of the Senate
is to advise and consent on gubernatorial nominations. These are especially
important when it comes to approving the nominations of district judges -- since
they serve at the forefront of Pennsylvania’s judicial system and are integral
members of the local community," Senator Robbins said.
"I was pleased to present the nominations of Brian Arthur, D. Neil McEwen
and Dennis Songer and very gratified that the Senate confirmed all three,"
Senator Robbins added.
Arthur and McEwen were confirmed by the Senate on June 30 and Songer was
confirmed on August 12.
Arthur, a resident of Greenville, takes over Magisterial District 35-3-03,
replacing William L. Fagley, who resigned. Arthur previously served 25 years as
a police officer and served 12 years as the Hempfield Township Police Chief.
McEwen, a resident of Grove City, takes over Magisterial District 35-3-02,
replacing Lawrence T. Silvis, who resigned. McEwen is a member of the Mercer
County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
Songer, a resident of Sharpsville, takes over Magisterial District
35-2-01, replacing James E. McMahon, who resigned. A certified financial planner
practitioner, he is employed by JFS Wealth Advisors of Hermitage.
