Robbins Announces Funds to Monitor for West Nile Virus in Mercer County

Harrisburg – State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) today announced the approval of $72,211 in state funds to check for the presence of West Nile Virus in Mercer County.

Robbins said the grant, awarded to the Mercer County Conservation District, will be used to implement a mosquito monitoring and virus surveillance program to determine if the virus is present in Mercer County and to assist in alerting residents about the potential threat.

"There have been no cases reported this year in Mercer County, or anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Robbins.  "Last year, four birds tested positive in Lawrence County, two birds and one mosquito sample tested positive in Crawford County, and one bird tested positive in Venango County.  So, while there is no need for alarm, it is important that monitoring continues."

The grant was awarded through the state Mosquito Surveillance Program, which is administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

To combat the spread of the virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, Pennsylvania has developed a comprehensive network covering all 67 counties. It includes trapping mosquitoes, collecting dead birds and monitoring horses, people and sentinel chickens.

While anyone can contract the virus, older adults and people with compromised immune systems are at highest risk of developing the disease. The virus can cause an inflammation of the brain.

The safest precautions are to eliminate standing water and cover skin as much as possible outdoors.  For more information about West Nile virus, including current test results for mosquitoes, birds and horses, visit the West Nile virus website at www.westnile.state.pa.us.
