General Assembly Cracks Down on Methamphetamines

Harrisburg –State Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) announced that the General Assembly sent to the Governor legislation today that would crack down on the deadly drug, methamphetamines (Meth).

"Methamphetamines are fast becoming a problem in Pennsylvania, but particularly so in rural areas," said Sen. Robbins. "Senate Bill 679, which I cosponsored, will significantly increase the penalties for manufacturing methamphetamines and give law enforcement greater tools to stop production of the deadly drug."

This legislation would make it a crime to illegitimately possess the ingredients used to make the highly addictive stimulant drug. This includes anhydrous ammonia, a chemical commonly used as a fertilizer by farms. It would set stiff penalties for possessing large quantities of other methamphetamines ingredients, including the dietary supplement ephedrine and pseudo ephedrine, a common decongestant found in cold medicine.

"I would also like to commend State Rep. John Evans (R-5) for his work, as he has put together two bills, House Bills 2724 and 2739, which would further combat this serious issue," said Robbins.
